History of district:
In the year 1995, Tiruchirappalli was trifurcated and the Perambalur and Karur district was formed. Perambalur district was divided into Perambalur and Ariyalur district in the year 2001 and merged with Perambalur in the year 2002. Now the district is bifurcated from Perambalur and it is functioning separately as the district of Ariyalur from 23rd November 2007.
Main occupation of the district:
Major Commercial Crop is sugarcane. Another main crop is Cashew. The pre-dominate soil in the district is red sanding with scattered packers of black soil. This town consists mainly of glade soil. The soil in the district is best suited for raising dry crops. Rice is also grown in some places.
ROAD: Two National Highways are crossing in this district. NH226 � Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thajavur, Manamadurai and NH227 � Trichy, Jayamkondam, Chidambaram. One State Highways SH143 � Ariyalur, Thungapuram, Thittakudi. TRAIN: Connected with Chennai, Madurai, Trichy and Erode. 267 Kms form Chennai, 70 from Trichy Junction.
Gangaikondacholapuram Temple, Kaliuga Varatharaja Perumal Temple, Thirumazhapadi Shri Vaithiyanatha Samy Koil, Pancha Loga Vigrahas and Dasavathara Manadapams are very famous in this Shivan Temples. Vettakudi � Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary is also located in Ariyalur District.
